Background

Art and graphic design are something I’ve always had an interest and passion for since I was a kid through drawing. After graduating high school in 2016, I got my associate’s degree in general studies from Tidewater Community College and then transferred to Old Dominion University in the fall of 2019. I was working on my information studies and marketing degree when I decided to take art classes here at TCC in the spring of 2022. Fear and doubt held me back for a long time when it came to pursuing the arts and now that I am focusing on art, I feel much happier. I enjoy being in an environment where everyone has similar goals and passions. With the recent opening of the Visual Arts and Design Center, it is great to have a space dedicated to us and it has been exciting to see the building come alive.

Goals

My goals related to graphic design are to gain all the skills needed to make me a well-rounded artist. After working on projects and building a portfolio, I hope to get a job that allows me to be creative. Fashion photography is something I always enjoy looking at and Dazed Korea magazine is a publication I would love to work at. Recently I have also been growing an interest in concert photography so it would be cool to be able to mix graphic design with music.

A designer whose work I admire is Leta Sobierajski because it’s very colorful, fun, and geometric. Her website is also entertaining to interact with and the contact links are unique and unconventional. She is also half of a duo called Wade and Leta and their biographies say that they “[make] music for your eyes". I would ask them how they work together as a team professionally.
